Party Tips & Activities
Discover a whole host of fancy and fabulous party tips and recipes, seasonal craft and activity ideas, and reading-readiness suggestions from the folks who bring you Fancy Nancy!
One thing that Fancy Nancy adores is sleepovers! She had so much fun when Bree slept over at her house, she considers herself something of an expert. In Fancy Nancy: Saturday Night Sleepover, Nancy’s parents win a vacation, so Nancy and JoJo get to sleep over at their neighbor’s home, Mrs. Devine’s. JoJo is a little nervous to sleep at someone else’s house, but luckily Nancy is happy to help prepare her little sister. The big night arrives, and JoJo and Nancy have a blast, but when it’s time for bed, it turns out Nancy wasn’t as prepared as she thought. Despite her nerves, Nancy realizes there is nothing better than a sister to make you feel better. Whether your child is a little nervous about a sleepover or jumping with excitement, here are a few tips to help your child have the best sleepover ever:
Plan a fancy dinner.
When Nancy sleeps over at Mrs. Devine’s house, she is served chicken à la king , which is quite fancy (and while it’s not a French dish, we love the use of à la ). For some kid-friendly French food ideas, serve a quiche Lorraine or some savory crêpes ! Prepping dinner is always a good opportunity to get kids involved. If they’re not feeling the French cuisine, go with a kid-friendly favorite: PIZZA! Buy some pizza dough and a variety of toppings and encourage the kids to make their own personal pizzas — the fancier, the better! If you’re planning a summertime sleepover, you may want to suggest dining al fresco (that’s fancy for “outside”). For breakfast, do it the French way and serve up some croissants and some chocolat chaud (that’s French for “hot chocolate”).
Have accessories at the ready.
Free play time is so valuable. It can be really fun to see where the children’s imaginations take them. But it never hurts to have a few activities to suggest either. At Mrs. Devine’s house, Fancy Nancy and JoJo enjoy trying different hair styles, playing dress-up, decking themselves out in jewelry, and putting on a fashion show. Suggest a camp out under the stars.
Warm summer nights provide the perfect excuse for an outdoor sleepover. Even if you don’t sleep outside, kids can catch fireflies (don’t worry, this tells you how to safely release them back into the wild), roast marshmallows, and learn about the stars. Fancy Nancy: Stellar Stargazer is full of fun facts about our solar system. Nancy even creates her own constellation and makes up a legend about it. You could suggest your guests to do the same! Stories at bedtime are always fun.
Play a game.
Sleepovers are not complete with some fun and laughter, especially when kids are tucked in and left alone to their own devices. If they’re sleeping outside or have the window open, they can listen for the different sounds in the wild and make a guessing game out of it! Maybe they’ll hear an owl, a frog, or a grasshopper.
Encourage guests to bring a sleepover survival kit.
Last, but not least, keep in mind that guests may be a bit nervous to sleep away from home. When Nancy and JoJo stay at Mrs. Devine’s, Nancy packs a picture of their mom and dad, just in case they miss them. If anyone has a favorite pillow, or stuffed animal, encourage them to pack it. You could even ask your guests about the bedtime traditions they have at home and incorporate them in to make them feel like they’re at home.
